Robots - First formal session |
Hi guys. We are having our first formal session for the Quadrotor project this Wednesday. This is for everyone who has expressed an interest in the project thus far to meet and get to know one another. Anyone else is welcome to attend but ALL who do must be a member of TechSoc (something about insurance and the extreme perils arising from sitting in a warm, well lit room). We will be discussing the directions the project is taking (further to the opinion poll taken at our last meeting and consultation with the research staff involved) and forming the teams people will work in on the various aspects of the project. The meeting is this Wednesday at 14:00 in the Union (room D103).

This year the TechSoc are embarking upon an epic adventure to make autonomous flying quadrotors (robots).
Something along these (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvRTALJp8DM) lines.
There’s a research team in the UCL Computer Science Department that are already working on autonomous swarms and they’ve kindly allowed us to help out. There’s lots of scope in this project to work on what we find most exciting, we’ve tried to narrow it down to these possible areas: • Micro controller programming. Working with the custom built micro controller to gather data feeds from the on board sensor suite and act accordingly. • Higher level concerns. Design and build a suite of algorithms that are used to control the robot’s behaviour in a variety of situations. • Build from scratch. Construct the frame from carbon fibre and lay out the sensors, micro controller and rotors. Put it all together and see if it works. • Associated applications. The project requires a range of software to be built that can be used by other designers in order to create their robot’s behaviour algorithms. Software is needed to display feedback and real time data streams.
Depending on the size of the group and the popularity of each of these options we may end up doing just one or all four.
If you’re interested in working on this exciting project then come to the demonstration next Friday (5th November) in Chadwick 218 at 13:00.
